After breakfast, drive to Chitwan National Park and check in the resort. It is a beautiful journey on the Kathmandu-Chitwan highway, through Nepal’s middle hill & Tarai, to the Royal Chitwon National Park. En-route, we will make few stops to look for Wall creeper & Braun Dipper in Trisuli River and its rocky walls.This evening we shall paddle down the Rapti River in search of waterbirds. The most notable bird species are Small Pratincole (winter visitor), Great Thick-knee, River Tern, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Black Stork, Wolly-necked Sork, Asian Open- billed Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Great Cormorant and many other waterbirds will be present, including Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Little Ringed and Kentish Plovers, Riber & Red-wattled Lapwing. Other species present in this area includes Ospray & Brown Fishowl.
The Park comprises 1000 sq.km of sal and riverine jungle and magnificent environment with a great variety of wildlife than any other area of Nepal. Over 480 species of birds have been recorded here and we can expect to see nearly one third of these, as well as many mammals and reptiles. These are likely to include the endangered Great One Horned Rhinoceros, wild boar, sambar, muntjc, spotted and hog deers , rhesus and hanuman monkeys, and possibly marsh muggar and fish eating gharial crocodiles. Tiger, leopard, sloth bears, and gaur (wild bison) are all common and regularly seen by the lucky ones! We shall be staying in comfortable Wildlife Lodge.
After breakfast, A full day based at the wildlife lodge. We shall explore the rivers by dug-out canoe, search the grasslands – for tigers, rhinos and other animals – on elephant back, and go bird-watching in the forest on foot. The dry Sal forest, Grassland dominate the Park and that hold a wide variety of species including, Red-thighed or Collored Falconet, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Crested Serpent Eagle, Shikra, White-eyed Buzzard, Crested Hawk-Eagle, Red Jungle fowl, Indian Peafowl, Oriental Turtle & spotted Doves, Yellow – footed Green Pigion, Alexandrine, Rose. ringed, and Plum-headed Parakeet, the delightful Indian Scops Owl, Jungle Owlet, Crested treeswift, Green Bee-eater, Indian Roller, Grey, Pied and Gaint Hornbills. A good variety of of woodpeckers accurs here and we should find Grey-capped Pigmy, Rufous, Grey-headed, Greater Yelownapes, and Great Flameback. As usual, mixed – specis feeding flocks form such Flycatchers, Thrushes, Bablers, Drongos etc.This should be an outstanding day. Overnight at Wildlife Lodge.
After breakfast, drive to Koshi Tappu (8 to 9 hours). It is a beautiful journey today on the east-west highway, through Nepal’s Tarai and across the plains of south east Nepal, to the great Kosi river. Enroute we will explore riverbeds of Rapti river near Hedtauda to look for the bizarre looking Ibis Bill. The barrage across the river was built between 1958 and 1964 to control and prevent flooding in the plains of northern India to the south. The vast expanse of open water created by the barrage, and the marshes, lagoons, sandbanks mud flats and arable land that lie around it offer and an outstanding wetland habitat. Almost all Nepalese species of wildfowl, waders, storks, ibises, egrets, terns and gulls accur here, plus a great variety of land birds, especially warblers, and birds of prey. Well in excess of 100 species should be seen each day at the Kosi Barrage, and the sharp-eyed may be lucky enough to see some of the endangered Gangetic river dolphins that live here. We shall overnight at Kosi Tented Camp and spend the afternoon visiting the local tribal village (THARU TRIBES) to know their cultural and bird-watching on one of the finest wetlands in Asia. Overnight at Koshi Tappu tented camp.
We rise early this morning to visit the Kosi Tappu reserve, just to the north east of the barrage. This is an area of seasonally inundated riverside grassland, together with some shisam and accacia woodland. Not only is this the last retreat, in Nepal , of the wild water buffalo, but it harbours many other mammals (including blue bulls, spotted deer and jungle cats) and an excellent avifauna. If elephants are available we shall rout the park on their backs! We shall hope to see some of the buffaloes, other mammals, and many of the grassland and water birds. – Parties, munias, larks, shrikes, and bablers. The notable species are Swamp Patridge, Black & White Ibis, Spotted & Barred Owlet, the endangered Black-necked Stork breeds in Kosi Tappu. During the afternoon we shall return to the barrage for a second afternoon’s bird-watching there. The open wetlands and river inside the reserve usually hold variety of wintering waterfowls, waders and large water bids, and we should find the rare Spot-billed Pelican, Ruddy Shelduck, Spot-billed Duck, Purple Swamhen, Greater Painted Snipe, Painted Stork, Great Egret , Purple & Night Heron, Cinnamon Bitten, Lesser & Greatrer Adjutant Stork, Greater & Lesser Coucal, Large-tailed 6 Indian Night jars, Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacana, Black -shouldered Kite, Osprey, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Pied Harier, Darter, Citrine,Yellow, White-browed & White Wagtails, Crested Bunting. etc. Overnight at Koshi Tappu tented camp.
Another early morning walk or elephant ride, back to the camp, where the vehicle is waiting to take us to Biratnager airport – another lovely flight back to Kathmandu. If weather permits Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt Kanchenjunga the three highest mountains in the word can seen! Upon arrival in Kathmandu, day at free for own activity. Overnight at Kathmandu hotel.
